Become a volunteer

The Story Studio Writing Society is always looking for reliable, passionate volunteers to help us help kids!

Board Members help shape the direction of Story Studio, and work with the staff to create and deliver exciting initiatives. We are currently seeking board members who have previous experience with non-profits and have expertise in the areas of event planning, accounting or education. If you are interested in learning more about this important role, please contact the executive director (sean.rodman@storystudio.ca)

Volunteer Writers provide content for our newsletter, website and social media. We’re looking for volunteers with strong writing and editorial skills, lots of creativity and are comfortable with writing short, high-interest pieces for a range of ages.

Workshop Volunteers (January – June) commit to regularly assisting our facilitators and youth in workshop settings. These volunteers work directly with students, encouraging, coaching and sometimes scribing for youth. Volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds: teachers, writers, parents, students. The common denominator is a passion for helping kids succeed. Classroom volunteers require a criminal record check. This is a fun, social way to keep connected with kids, meet other volunteers, gain classroom experience.

Volunteer Editors & Typists (January – June) can commit as often as they like. They are required to pick up workbooks, type stories and return them. This is a fun and often challenging job, as students’ writing can be tricky – decoding it takes a special eye. Editors receive typed files and edit typos, spelling, grammar and format stories into paragraphs. Editors should have strong grammar skills and a careful eye for language.
